Inner Leadership Development Programme
Carving a pathway to lead a meaningful life from the inside out.
The ILD Program is designed to cater to individual needs and equip participants with the tools to conquer their greatest adversary – themselves. Despite the opportunities available, many of us lack the mental, physical, or spiritual readiness to seize them. Sometimes, we fail to recognise these opportunities altogether due to being preoccupied with unproductive activities.
With our ILD programme, we delve into 3 core fundamental human pillars and offer clients opportunities to experience a sense of meaning and purpose with the life they lead for themselves and their family.
1: Physical wellbeing
Physical wellbeing encompasses various aspects of our lives, such as nutrition, exercise, sleep, stress management, and preventative measures for chronic conditions. By adopting healthy habits and a comprehensive approach to physical wellbeing, we can enhance our overall quality of life, reduce the risk of illness, and achieve a healthier, happier existence.
2: Mental wellbeing
Mental health is closely tied to the internal dialogue we have with ourselves. The stories we tell ourselves, often based on past experiences, can become our reality and lead to negative thought patterns. This programme focuses on rewiring our brains and creating new ways of thinking that can lead to a positive future.
3: Spiritual wellbeing
The ILD programme explores spiritual health by focusing on our relationship with ourselves and others. We delve into important values like integrity, honesty, and love for our family, friends, and community. We also highlight the benefits of doing things for others and how it can bring happiness and love into our lives, enhancing our spiritual wellbeing.

Stepping stones to Alternative Education
Developing leaders for our future generation
With an estimated one in twenty New Zealand children known to Police for offending before reaching the age of 14, our mission is to provide an alternative education space for our youth to not become a number but an inspiration and leader to many.
Our Alternative Education programme focuses on empowering taiohi (youth) by providing them with the knowledge and tools they need to reach their goals to live a life with meaning and purpose. We offer a caring and supportive environment where taiohi can develop at their own pace.
Our kaupapa involves identifying each taiohi’s passion and aspirations, plus helping them map out a course to achieve their goals. We place them at the forefront of their own journey and provide guidance to help them explore various pathways and opportunities.
To help our taiohi achieve their full potential, we emphasize the importance of balancing all four dimensions of well-being. We believe that by providing a holistic education, our taiohi will be better equipped to navigate their personal and professional lives with confidence and resilience.
Our program offers a range of activities to support this, including:
- Literacy
- Numeracy
- Art and Design
- Music
- Technology
- Health and Fitness
- Mentoring
- Education and Career Pathways
There are currently only 64 places in our district, so the waitlist can be quite long. If you would like to request a place for your child, you can get in contact with us and we will forward your request to Ngatiwai Trust, as they manage the enrolments on behalf of MoE.
Added Value
We collaborate with local programmes and educational providers to support our taiohi in pursuing further education, training, or employment. We have established relationships with Tupu Ake Forestry Programme, Northland Waste, G&H Training (Carpentry and Automotive), and the Regent Training Centre. Our team is continually seeking new partnerships to broaden our taiohi’s opportunities.

Frequently Asked Questions
Every young person is on a different journey. Some young people may be able to successfully transition to school or further training by the end of a one term (10 week) enrolment. For other taiohi, a successful transition may take longer. Taiohi work closely with their Navigators, the Alternative Education Manager and MoE to develop the best Collaborative Action Plan for their unique needs.
The programme is completely free for taiohi. Occasionally, taiohi are encouraged to participate in fundraising activities such as selling hangi to raise funds for extracurricular activities.

Frequently Asked Questions
The programme usually starts at 9am and runs for five days per week, to mimic the routine of a typical employment opportunity. Each day will include a component of physical exercise, a reflective session, and a chance to learn new skills to aid your employability. Establishing routine is a critical part of the programme. It is important for attendees to bring comfortable clothing and footwear suitable for walking, and to attend sessions daily.
Tokotoko Solutions offers work-ready programmes in collaboration with funding government agencies – usually the Ministry of Social Development (MSD). To enrol in the programme, agencies will have their own set of criteria, which usually includes being unemployed and in receipt of a work and income benefit.
Most of the time, individuals are referred from these agencies directly on to the programme.
Where possible, we do allow enrolments from other interested individuals who are looking to engage in employment opportunities and upskill in their career.

Innovative Business Start-Up
Nurturing innovation to grow from an idea
At Tokotoko Solutions, we believe in supporting individuals with great business ideas but with limited support and financial resources to make them happen. Our innovative business start-up program offers:
- Flexible hours: Our staff members are able to complete their work at Tokotoko Solutions and focus on building their own businesses during their free hours.
- Regular meetings: We schedule regular meetings to discuss progress on both their work with Tokotoko and their business start-up.
- Draft business plan and budget: Once we have a draft business plan and budget in place, we make referrals to external professionals who can provide additional support.
- External business mentors: Our program includes external business mentors who provide advice and support for our staff members’ next steps.
- Final viability check: We conduct a final health check on the viability of the business and if they are able to stand on their own, we let them go and start the process of screening for new business start-ups to support.
If you have a great business idea and think you would be a good candidate for this initiative, please don’t hesitate to give us a call. We are committed to helping individuals turn their business ideas into successful ventures.
Youth Mentoring - Awhi Ako
Support the talent and potential in our students
Tokotoko Solutions provides one-on-one mentoring services for youth aged 6 – 16 who have experienced significant trauma in their lives and are needing support with successful reintegration into school. We connect them with an experienced mentor who they can talk to and who can provide support as they navigate through challenges. In collaboration with families, schools, and support agencies, we develop a customised plan that focuses on their individual goals and needs.
If you are interested in sponsoring our youth mentoring programme, please get in touch with our team.
How does it work for schools and government funded agencies?
Step 1: Referral process
We receive client referrals from a variety of sources, including Te Kahu Toi – Intensive Wraparound Services (IWS), Oranga Tamariki – High Complex Needs (HCN), and schools in the Whangarei area. By working closely with these organisations, we can identify and support individuals who require assistance and mentoring.
Step 2: Family Meeting
To provide comprehensive support for our clients, we involve their families, schools, and other relevant agencies in a collaborative meeting. The primary aim of this meeting is to establish a support plan with the ultimate goal of keeping clients in school. We consult with families and ensure they are comfortable and fully onboard with the plan we’ve created. This enables us to develop a tailored plan that addresses the unique needs and circumstances while keeping their family and support networks fully engaged and informed.
Step 3: Long-term Mentoring & Support
We recognize the importance of providing our clients with personalised support, which includes access to face-to-face meetings, phone conversations, and texting when appropriate. Additionally, we are committed to working collaboratively with other agencies to ensure the success of support plans that are already in place for our clients. By maintaining open lines of communication and a collaborative approach, we are better equipped to support our clients in achieving their personal and professional goals.
Frequently Asked Questions
This is usually determined by the funding agency, who make detailed support plans for the child based on their individual life circumstances and needs. Young people in our 1-1 youth mentoring generally stay for a minimum of 10 weeks and up to 2 years within our youth mentoring services.
Our young people leave our space feeling more confident in themselves, learning how to set and respect boundaries, and have a deeper sense of self and others. Often, youth mentoring has been the key source of stability for young people facing challenging and changing circumstances.
Unfortunately, the vast majority of our young people access our services through government agency funding and the threshold for obtaining this funding can be quite high.
On occasion, the Tokotoko Charitable Trust or other private funding streams may be able to support a young person with a smaller quantity of youth mentoring to help with specific needs. It is best to reach out to our team to discuss your child’s specific needs and to check if we can offer a place on a youth programme to support them.
